RECEPTION OF STUYVESANT-Peter Stuy-
vesant, the fourth and most famous of the Dutch
Governors-General, was appointed in 1647. He lost a
leg in the Dutch service at the island of St. Martin. It
was his lot to be obliged to surrender New Netherland
to the English in 1664.
