WASTOVER ON THE JAMES, VIR-
GINIA. This amous old mansion, one of the choicest
mo representative specimens of Colonial Archi-
tecture in ered, was the home of Col. William Byrd,
a distinguished wit, and elegant cavalier of the 18th cen-
tury, who, 1733, foundedwo cities. One at Shoc-
coe's to be called Richmond and the other at the point
of Appomarto to be called Petersborg." The master
of Westover explained that these localities were "natur-
ally intended for marts," and adds, "thus we did not
build castles, only but cities in the air."
