ROBERT FULTON, Born 1765, Died 1815
He built the first practical paddle wheel steam-
ship, the Clermont, in the year 1807. On Aug.
17th of the same year he undertook to show the
commercial value of his invention by steaming
up the Hudson River from New York to Albany,
a distance of 150 miles in 32 hours, equal to about
5 miles an hour. He named his steamship the
Clermont after Chancellor Livingston's Estate on
the Hudson, and it was at Clermont Manor where
he landed first before going to Albany.
