THE WATER WORKS PUMPING STATION is located
on the 72-acre plot of ground on Jefferson Avenue
owned by the city. The park in the front of this
building is one of Detroit's beauty spots, and is throng-
ed daily by thousands of visitors. The immense ma-
chinery pumps 105,000,000 gallons of water every
twenty-four hours to all parts of the city, receiving
the supply from Lake St. Clair, which is pumped
through a long tunnel to the distributing point. On the
right is shown the settling basin, which is 365 feet
wide, 800 feet long, 15 feet deep and has a capacity of
30,000,000 gallons.
