In the fatal witchcraft delusion of 1692, which
cast such a stain upon the high civilization of the Massachu-
setts Bay Colony, children were the first accusers. In the six
months during which the de usion raged nineteen persons
were hanged on Gallows Hill. and one man, Giles Corey, was
pressed to death. There is no foundation for the statement
that the witches were burned. Here lived Ann Putnam, one
of the first accusers, then 12 years of age. In later years she
confessed the errors of her youth The house was erected
previous to 1692. Danvers formed a part of Salem until the
