ELM STREET. This, the principal street of the city, and
one of the handsomest thoroughfares in New England, extends
for about three miles, nearly north and south; it is 100 feet
wide, with spacious sidewalks and roadway; ou it are located
the chief banks, insurance buildings, and other large business
houses. The street was named from a row of lm trees
originally planted in the center of the roadway.
