Pioneer Park, in which my early home
is located, was dedicated by me at the
time of founding the town (now city) of
Puyallup, in 1879, to perpetuate the
memory of the early pioneers who made
the settlement of the Oregon country
possible.
Later immigrants to the Oregon country
have long felt some action should be taken
to honor these real pioneers who opened
the way with the first vagon train (1843)
to cross the continent, and who first
founded American institutions on the
Pacific coast and made Oreg an American
territory instead of remaining
of remaining a British
colony.
