THE COMMANDER'S HOUSE at Camp
Independence was built shortly after the
great earthquake of 1872; hence its solid
frame construction compared to adobe in
previous buildings. The Camp was aban-
doned in 1877, and in 1883 the Comman-
der's House was moved to Independence.
It has been refurnished by the Eastern
California Museum Assn. and is open for
tours except on Mondays and Tuesdays.
