RDINARILY we as-
sociate the word
"Intemperance"
with excessive and abus-
ive use of alcoholic bev-
erages, rarely, if ever,
attributing the vices and
evils of intemperance to
other causes. There are,
however, other forms of
intemperance quite as
pernicious and detri-
mental to the general
welfare of mankind as
that of the excessive use
of alcohol. One of them
is the abusive and im-
moderate use of tea and
coffee, especially the lat-
ter, which when taken
in large quantities and
in the form of black cof-
fee (café noir), is quite as
intoxicating, exhilara-
ting and health-under-
mining as alcohol.
