Bacon's New Atlantis
The next monthly meeting of the Bacon Society of America will be held in the
East Parlor, second floor, National Arts Club, Tuesday night, February 12, at 8 o'clock.
The program will be extemporized, as usual, but a feature will be discussion of an
article on Page 22 of the Literary Digest of January 19, 1929, entitled "A Modern
Portrait of Lord Bacon," which is presented in lieu of a review of Lytton Strachey's
new book, "Elizabeth and Essex," and which begins with the statement, "Everybody
knows what Pope said about Lord Bacon,-'the wisest, brightest, meanest of man-
kind.'..." Our worthy President, Dr.Willard Parker, has written a protest against
such an 'ex-parte treatment of Bacon's character, and pleads for a more comprehensive
view. Is Bacon to be singled out for condemnation for one mis-step (assuming his
attitude toward Essex to have been unworthy), or does he deserve a monument in
Central Park beside "Shaxpur" (who couldn't write his own name!), in recognition
of the genius which visioned our twentieth century "New Atlantis"?
"Nihil est quin male narrando possit depravari."
