ASSASSINATION OF THE PROPHET JOSEPH SMITH AT CARTHAGE, ILL.
Back:
As the assassins swarmed up the stairs, firing
through the door, Hyrum Smith was first to fall dead.
John Taylor was next seriously wounded, and as he
attempted to leap from the window, a second bullet
struck his watch, causing him to fall back into the
room. He rolled under the bed and was unnoticed by
the mob. Joseph Smith also endeavored to leap from
the window, when two bullets pierced him, and he fell
to the ground. His murder was accomplished as he
leaned against the well curb, as shown in the picture.
Willard Richards escaped unharmed. The Carthage
Greys, who were pledged by Gov. Ford to protect the
o prisoners, stood idly by, and no doubt some partici-
pated in the crime. June 27th, 1844.
