Additional Details:
No.41H - The City of Nauvoo, situated on the banks of the Mississippi, in Illinois, was incorporated December, 1839. Here the Mormons, under the leadership of Joseph Smith, built a beautiful and thriving city. A magnificent temple was erected, and for a number of years the Mormons rested in comparative peace. The efforts of their persecutors, however, resulted in their exile in 1846, from which point began the long and hazardous journey across the plains which resulted in the settlement of the Salt Lake Valley. The temple was destroyed by vandals in 1848.
