RABBIT EAR COURTS
Clayton, New Mexico
In the background of Clayton's picturesque
Rabbit Ear Court lies the Orejas de Conejo
(Rabbit Ear) Mountains. The mountains were
named for the great Cheyenne Chief, Orejo de
Conejo, who
who was
killed in battle in 1717 and
buried on top
of the mountain that bears his
name.
Many
battles between the Spaniards
and Indians took place in this area. Arrow-
heads in abundance can still be found on the
surrounding plains. The mountains also served
as a landmark to guide early settlers over the
Cimmaron cut-off of the old Santa Fe trail.
