Mail Car of the Hannibal & St. Joseph
Railroad is a replica of the one in which,
on July 28, 1862, between West Quincy
and St. Joseph, Mo.–now part of the
Burlington system–U.S. Mail was first
sorted in transit. This innovation, from
which grew
Service, was prompted by the need to
speed mail westward from St. Joseph via
overland stage coach.
