Additional Details:
Engine 35 - vintage of 1882 - typical of the American-type locomotive so popular during the first fifty years of railroad development in this country. Mail Car of the Hannibal & St. Joseph Railroad is a replica of the one in which, on July 28, 1862, between West Quincy and St. Joseph, Mo-now part of the Burlington system-U.S. Mail was first sorted in transit. This innovation from which grew the present Railway Mail Service, was prompted by the need to speed mail westward from St. Joseph via overland stage coach. Keepsake Press, 3737 W. Armitage Ave., Chicago, Ill.
