San Luis Obispo is located in a bowl-shaped valley at the
southern base of the Santa Lucia Mountains and is the county
seat of San Luis Obispo county. The town grew around the
Mission San Luis Obispo De Tolosa, fifth of the chain estab-
lished Sept. 1, 1772. The friars of the mission were the first
to experiment with the making of tiles, which proved so
successful that they became the fashion for the other missions
after 1784. Today the town is modern with stores, motels, and
other things that go with an up to date city ... M.P.
