Additional Details:
First public building erected in Washington; constructed of Virginia freestone; called "White House" because original building was burned by British troops, leaving only the walls standing, and was painted white to obliterate marks of fire. Washington himself selected the site, laid the corner stone (Oct. 13, 1792), and lived to see the building completed, walking through only a few days before his death. On the walls hung magnificent paintings of the wives of the Presidents. Photographed for literature of Draughon's Practical Business Colleges: Washington, Raleigh, Atlanta, Nashville, Little Rock, St. Louis, Evansville, Kansas City, Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, Oklahoma City, Shreveport, Knoxville, Memphis, Paducah and other cities-31 Colleges in 17 States.
