On May 5th, 1961 Commander Alan B. Shepard, Jr. completed
a 15 minute: 22 second sub-orbital space flight which dramatical-
ly placed the United States into the space age. The Atlas-
Mercury Spacecraft, named by Commander Shepard FREEDOM 7,
reached a maximum altitude of 116.5 miles and traveled down-
range 302 miles from the then Cape Canaveral, Florida launch
site. The spacecraft, equivalent to an 8 story building, weighed
2800 pounds and traveled at a speed approaching 5,180 miles
per hour. After recovery in the Atlantic Ocean and aboard the
U.S.S. aircraft carrier "Lake Champlain" Shepard's only comment
was: “Boy, What A Ride!"
