On May 5th, 1961 Commander Alan B. Shepard, Jr. completed a 15 minute: 22 second sub-orbital space flight which dramatically placed the United States into the space age. The Atlas-Mercury Spacecraft, named by Commander Shepard Freedom 7, reached a maximum altitude of 116.5 miles and traveled downrange 302 miles from the then Cape Canaveral, Florida launch site. The spacecraft, equivalent to an 8 story building, weighed 2800 pounds and traveled at a speed approaching 5,180 miles per hour. After recovery in the Atlantic Ocean and aboard the U.S.S> aircraft carrier "Lake Champlain" Shepard's only comment was "Boy, What a Ride!"
