Jeff Gordon became the first two-time winner of the Brickyard
400 on August 1, 1998. Gordon earned $1,637,625.00,
surpassing Arie Luyendyk's single-race earnings record set
at the 1997 Indianapolis 500, making Gordon the winner of
the largest purse in the history of auto racing.
