When the British burned the Town of
Fairfield during the Revolution, they
burned the first Tide Mill for which a grant
was given in 1712. The second Tide Mill
was built on Herdsmen's Island; was
burned in the fifties and was later replaced
with a third.
Now that such a mill can no longer sup-
ply the wants of our people, the old Tide
Mill has been rebuilt to serve the people
in a new way.
From the harbor side can be seen a
harbor that in the days of our supremacy
on the seas teemed with small merchant
ships and on that part of the harbor that
is close to the Tide Mill were two shipyards
where ships as large as brigs were built.
Today the racing fleet of the Pequot
Yacht Club, and the golf grounds of the
Fairfield Country Club can be seen from
the comfortable veranda where meals and
refreshments are served, all year round.
