The Battle Monument at Bennington Center, Vermont, is a magnificant sharf of gray-blue dolomite, thirty-seven feet square at the base and, including the metal star at the top, 306 feet 4 1/2 inches high. The entrance hall, twenty feet square and thirty-nine feet high, is a landing for the stairs. Between the entrance hall and grand look out floor there are thirty-four flights with 412 steps. the architect was J. Philip Rinn of Boston, Mass. The corner stone was laid on August 16, 1887. The monument was dedicated on August 19, 1891. It commemorates the Battle of Bennington, foughts August 16, 1777. the total cost of themonument was $ 112,000. |
