SAN FRANCISCO-OAKLAND BAY BRIDGE
CANTILEVER AND EAST BAY SPAN
Framed by the steel triangular beam of the lower deck,
this picture shows the largest cantilever in the United
States, which forms the east bay crossing from San Fran-
cisco-Oakland Bay Bridge.
This cantilever, 1400 feet in length and weighing 21,000
tons, is the heaviest cantilever per foot of its kind. The
closing of this gigantic structure was one of the engineer-
ing achievements of history. Each half of the main span
was built out 700 feet and the closure was accomplished
by means of eight hydraulic jacks, each having a "push”
of 500 tons.
