It is situated on Mount Fitzwilliam on a site formerly
owned by Paul Drumgold, and commands an extensive view
of the Island. In front stands a statue of Columbus, which
was modelled in London by the aid of Washington Irving
and imported by Governor Sir James Carmichael Smith, who
presented it to the Colony. The gardens around Govern-
ment House are extensive and contain fine old trees.
