When the British troops occupied Richmond during
the Revolution, the Virginia legislature fled to Charlottes-
ville and then upon the approach of Tarleton to Staunton.
From June 7 to 23, 1781, the legislative sessions were held
in the original Trinity which stood on the site of the beautiful
vine-clad edifice and was the first house of worship in Staun-
ton. Among the assemblymen who met here were Patrick
Henry, Richard Henry Lee and other notables. On June
19th the Legi lature here elected Gen. Thomas Nelson
Governor of Virginia to succeed the immortal Jefferson.
