THE CATHEDRAL OF SAN FRANCISCO DE ASSISI.
It is: a modern Building and stands upon the site of
and over the former adobe parish church. It was
built by Archbishop Juan B. Lamy and is his Monu-
ment. There are many fine paintings in this edifice.
Behind the altar is a richly carved and painted
rerédas, erected by Governor Del Valle in 1691.
Back of the altar are.hung the old paintings, and
beneath it are the remains of two Franciscan Friars,
who were murdered by Indians in the uprising of
1680. The remains of Archbishop Lamy also rest
