This picture was recently bought for the nation and placed permanently in the
National Gallery. The early days of the artist were spent at Seville, He
worked first in Madrid and later in Italy, As regards technique he is considered to
have been the greatest artist the world has ever seen. It is an interesting fact that
Velasquez was the first artist who used oils as his sole mediium.
