CANBY'S CROSS
LAVA BEDS NATIONAL MONUMENT, CALIF.
This cross was erected in memory of Gen. E. R.
S. Canby who was murdered on April 11, 1873
by Captain Jack, Modoc Indian. Lt. J. S. Parks,
21st infantry, erected the cross on Sept. 29, 1882.
The incident occurred during unsuccessful peace
negotiations wherein Rev. Eleasar Thomas was
killed also, Alfred Meacham was seriously wounded
and L. S. Dyar escaped-all members of the
Peace Commission.
