The Cathedral. One of the chief architectural torna-
ments in Havana is “La Catedral de la Virgen Maria de la
Concepcion,” commonly called Columbus Cathedral. It
was built in 1724 as a college for the Jesuits, but became
the cathedral in 1789. This edifice is supposed to contain
at least a portion of the remains of Christopher Columbus,
which are kept in a costly tomb of sculptured marble.
