PEACE INSTITUTE, founded in 1857 (by Presbyterians),
a gift from William Peace, after whom it is named ; it
has occupied its present site since 1872. The Institute, which
gives regular college courses, is open te women only. During
the Civil War, the original building was used as a Confederate
hospital.
