USING THE BREECHES BUOY. When the Life-
Savers cannot reach a stranded ship with their life boat or
surf boat, the favorite method of bringing the imperiled persons
ashore is by means of the breeches buoy, patterned after the
familiar type of life preserver, and fitting under the arms
with a depending support for the body; it is suspended from
a trolley that runs on a rope cableway, and is pulled back
and forth by a second rope attached to it.
