BATTLING THE ELEMENTS – Fierce winds at Candlestick
quickly became a potent issue, leading to the magnification of
other problems. Attorney Melvin Belli sued the Giants because
the “radiant heating" didn't work—and he won. A wind gust blew
pitcher Stu Miller off the mound during the '61 All-Star Game, with
the world watching on television. According to reports, architect
John Bolles assured that enclosing the stadium would be the
solution to the troublesome winds. He was partially right. A $16.1
million expansion and renovation project was completed in 1971,
increasing baseball seating to 58,000. Wind velocity inside the
park was reduced but not eliminated.
