Founded in 1852 and privately supported,
the Society collects, preserves, and
disseminates information relating to the
history of California and the American West.
THE GRAND SALON - Now used as the So-
ciety's gallery. The Renaissance motifs used
throughout the building are repeated here in
richly toned mahogany. The supreme craftsman-
ship of the woodcarving and cabinetwork is
particularly admired. The facing of the elabo-
rately carved fireplace is of Italian marble.
