Founded in 1852 and privately supported,
the Society collects, preserves, and
disseminates information relating to the
history of California and the American West.
THE LIBRARY READING ROOM - Spacious Vic-
torian master bedrooms on the second floor
have been converted into the Society's modern
20,000-volume reference library. This view
shows a portion of the reading room and the
office of the Librarian beyond. The collection
is one of the best repositories of Californiana
and Western lore in the United States.
