AUBURN, CALIFORNIA
Early in 1849, Auburn was known as Wood's or North Fork Dry
Diggings. It was one of the earliest mining camps in California,
gold first being mined here in May of 1848, by Claude Chana
and his Indians. The name was changed a year later by the
miners who were with Stevenson's Volunteer Regiment who
came from Auburn, N.Y. The gold gave out, but Auburn's de-
cline was circumvented by the advent of the railroad in 1865,
and by the planting of orchards in the 1880's and 1890's. The
narrow streets twist uphill under wide-branching trees that lend
a flavor of the gold mining days ...M.P.
