Early in 1849, Auburn was known as Wood's or North Fork Dry Diggings. It was one of the earliest mining camps in California, gold first being mined here in May of 1848, by Claude Chana and his Indians. The name was changed a year later by the miners who were with Stevenson's Volunteer Regiment
