Niles Canyon Railway's slightly-smoking GE-built
ex-U.S. Navy locomotive #298 heads east across Farwell
Bridge over Alameda Creek between Fremont and
Sunol, CA. Built in 1903, Farwell is the newer of two
railroad bridges in use on the former Central
Pacific/Southern Pacific line. Dresser Bridge, to the
West, dates to 1896. Both are used by diesel and less-
frequent steam trains, and by rail bus M-200 (ex-
California Western) during regular operations as well as
by brush-trimming and track repair crew trains. Alameda
County owns the right-of-way.
