Dear Senator Leahy, In light of the ongoing harassment of environmental and social justice activists by the FBI, I urge to you safeguard our constitutional rights in the face of newly-proposed anti-terrorism legislation. As a supporter of Judi Bari and Darryl Cherney's lawsuit against the FBI and Oakland Police for attempting to frame the victims of a terrorist bombing with the very crime committed against them, I also urge you to resume your Senate Judiciary Committee's oversight hearings on the FBI. There still needs to be a hearing dedicated specifically to the FBI's attacks on the civil liberties of peaceful activists in this country. The Bari Bombing case needs the scrutiny of the Senate, in particular. From FBI harassment of peaceful protestors at the anti-globalization demonstrations, to the framing of Geronimo Pratt Ji Jaga and Leonard Peltier, your committee has a special responsibility to ensure that this issue is probed and remedied. The recent horrific attack on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon must not be met with the criminalization of legal political dissent in this country. Thank you.
