Horsedrawn cars couldn't always negotiate the
steep hills in San Francisco; so in 1873, Andrew
Hallidie invented the Cable Car. Today the
Cable Car still maintains its fixed speed of
9.5 m.p.h. and serves as one of the last remind-
ers of a gentler, more leisurely era in Ameri-
can History. Only a few Cable Cars remain. And
