he studied law, and was one of the original
members of the Republican party. At the
outbreak of the War he was trusted with
armament and commissariat of the
New York troops, and became quartermas-
ter-general. He was named for Vice-Presi-
dent to please the Stalwart s, and became
President on September 19, 1881.
