Wanamaker's Mailing Card 1876-32d Anniversary Grover Cleveland, "the first Democratic President after the war," had a hard life as a boy, but he was persevering. He clerked in a store, studied law, and became Sheriff of Buffalo, then Mayor, then Governor, and then President for two terms, being inaugurated in 1885 and again in 1893. A feature of his administration was his support of Venezuela against Great Britain, resulting in arbitration.
