JAMES A. GARFIELD
was of Puritan lineage. He was raised in
poverty, and at fourteen was a farm laborer.
He studied in the district night school, and
entered college. In the Civil War he rose
from Colonel to Major-General. Resign-
ing, he entered Congress.
President in 1880; he was shot by Guiteau
on July 2, 1881, the wound proving fatal
eighty days later
