THE CAPITAL IN ADAMS' TIME
John Adams was inaugurated on March
4, 1797. By November 22, 1800, when he
addressed Congress for the last time, the
Capital was a conglomeration of half-finish-
ed public buil dings and huts. Mrs. Adams,
on her journey to Washington, lost her way,
and wandered two hours in the woods with-
out finding path or guide. She afterward
wrote: "Woods are all you see from Balti-
more until you reach this city, which is only
so in name."
