Bertha, John Ascuaga's Nugget's
own amazing elephant, has been the
"biggest" star in the Reno area since
1962. She was born in India in 1945.
Now, fully grown, she weighs
approximately five tons!
Like all the great entertainers who've
appeared at the Nugget, Bertha enjoys
"star" treatment. She is groomed daily
and her skin is frequently smoothed
with a coarse sandpaper material. She
receives an extensive pedicure every
six weeks. Fine dining for Bertha is a
balanced diet of oat hay, a variety of
vegetables, fruit and bread.
Bertha lives in her own custom-built
"Elephant Palace", just west of the
Nugget (at 14th Street and Nugget
Avenue). Her home features a private
swimming pool and fenced exercise
yard. Bertha loves to meet people and
eagerly accepts visitors any day of the
week, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
