We
live
by
numbers
Numbers are the stop and
go signals of our civilization.
As our most exact and
reliable symbols for measuring
fact, we use them perhaps
hundreds of times a day
in shopping, telephoning,
paying bills, etc. For example,
we write almost 13 billion
checks a year, nearly twice
as many as 10 years ago,
and the figure keeps growing.
Numbers are the natural
language of the computer,
man's most efficient tool for
managing them.
