HELPING MAN KNOW THE UNKNOWN
computer
simulation
By using computers in pre-
calculation, scientists are
testing theories without the
time, expense and hazards
of experimentation. Many
manufacturers use simulation
instead of prototype con-
struction. An IBM computer
gave a Swiss scientist,
who was working on decom-
pression, exact data concerning
the special mixture of
breathing gases needed to
make his record 728-foot
dive to the bottom of a
lake. Without the computer's
calculations, the diver might have
suffered agonizing "bends."
