Palm Avenue, Botanical Gardens. The Royal
Botanical Gardens, on the west bank of the river, were
founded in 1786, on the suggestion of Colonel Kyd, and have
been of more service to public and private gardens of the
world than any other horticultural institute. Besides
possessing the rarest of plants it is celebrated for its Palm
Avenue, and the great Banyan Tree, which covers ground
nearly 1,000 feet in circumference.
There is an attraction besides architecture and
scenery, and that is the delicious Indian and Ceylon
teas produced in these countries. They are refreshing
as a summer drink, iced, and when served hot make a
satisfying, luscious breakfast beverage.
