EMBARCADERO PLAZA FOUNTAIN,
San Francisco's unconventional and mas-
sive sculpture, was dedicated April 21,
1971 amid comments ranging from "a
work of art” to “a loathsome monstros-
ity." 30,000 gallons of water per minute
cascades over this 710-ton, $310,000
fountain designed by Arman Vaillancourt.
Controversial? A "masterpiece" or "idi-
otic rubble"? Well, beauty is in the eye
of the beholder!
