ar across the Sierra Nevadas,
Close held bỷ the Golden Gate,
Is a great city raised from ashes-
A city alive with mirth;
A city where many throbbing hearts,
Their hope, and effort, and life,
Were dashed in a single moment
To a stillness worse than strife.
There, the mariner steering homeward
Found his city in ruins that day,
And his loved ones seeking shelter
From the flames as they spread from
the bay,
There, foot-lights glimmer and dazzle,
There. friends and foes alike
Receive the blessings of nature,
Share in the joys of life; (broken,
There, hearts that are crushed and
Find solace in rippling waves,
In the wake of a churning ferry,
They sink to a peaceful grave.
Wandered hither and yon thro' the chaos,
But at last on the cool, green sod,
'Neath the April blossoms of Golden Gate,
Were safe with the poppies and birds
and God.
A nd life, and love, and sorrow,
Ambition, effort, and hope
Are struggling for the morrow
In a seething passion, to cope
With the elements of its industry
Undulating from mart and mills-
The goal at the end of the rainbow,
As seen o'er the emerald hills.
There, fortunes await the workers,
And mansions rise in the night;
Great buildings defy the wreckers,
That tremble with anger and might;
While humble, though fraught with
rom machinery lifting and screeching
In foundations that settle and sigh,
Knowing well it is no use to barter
For man 'till he's ready to die-
Comes an inspiration to struggle,
A desire to work and not cry;
Reach over, and onward, and upward,
Strive on to a climax on high.

Man gazes in awed surprise
From the ashes and twisted girders,
To the cornice reared to the skies.
city so gay in her sórrow,
A city so brave in her fears;
She has raised from a desolate horror
A work that will stand test of years;
And the Stars and Stripes have been floating
Three years since that terrible day
O'er grand pillars and magnif cent struc-
tures,
Saint Francis SHALL live on the bay.
