Piccadilly Circus is formed by the intersecting of the
two fashionable thoroughfares of Regent Street and Picca-
dilly. Several other streets also converge at this point,
and handsome shops, theatres, restaurants, and public
buildings, render this a very fine circus. The bronze
fountain and statue of Mercury in the middle was unveiled
in 1893, in memory of Lord Shaftesbury, the philanthropist.
Alfred Gilbert, A.R.A., was the designer.
