Was born October 27, 1858 in New York City. His ancestors were among the early settlers of this city and rose to prominence. In 1875 he entered Harvard, graduating in 1880. Being of frail health he went West in 1881 and lived on a ranch. At the age of 23 he entered his uncle's law firm; wrote a number of books on Western life. He became Assistant Secretary of Navy under McKinley; resigned to enlist in the Spanish war, and became Lieut.-Colonel of United States Volunteers. Became Governor of New York. In 1896 was elected Vice-President; on death of McKinley, September 14, 1901, he took the oath of the office as President. Was re-elected President in 1904. |
