George Fite Waters studied sculpture under Auguste Rodin, and had the distinction of being his last pupil. The sculpture of Abraham Lincoln was cast from wax in bronze probably in 1924 or 1925 at the C. Valsuani foundry. It was purchased from Waters by Henry Waldo Coe, shipped in 1926, donated to Portland, and unveiled in 1928.
