Founded in 1878 and long considered the most beauti- ful educational building in Florida, the Convent of Mary Immaculate has played an heroic part in the history of the city. It was thrown open as a hospital during the yellow fever plague and many of the nuns perished along with their patients. During the Spanish-American War it again became a hospital and its interesting museum is enriched by many gifts from grateful patients. The grounds are a treasure-trove to botanists.
